In the midst of a political and institutional crisis, what do young university students think of the performance of politicians, public entities, corruption, the economic model or citizen insecurity? The Public Opinion Research Center (CIOP) of the University of Piura prepared the study “Political crisis and democratic institutions: the perception of Peruvian university students” among students from public and private universities, who have revealed their disappointment with our political class.
Thus, there are 80% of respondents who believe that it is the same or worse than 20 years ago, only 12% believe that it has improved. In this context, it is not surprising that there is also a negative evaluation of public institutions; 62% point out that these are always corrupt, 50% believe that they are not transparent and 35% maintain that they act illegally.
At the same time, there are 90% of university students who believe that political parties must improve.
“These are encouraging data. If, on the one hand, it is considered that the political class does not currently look after the common good, on the other, it is expected to improve in the future. There is a very small percentage of university students who are unaware of the nature of political parties as vehicles for participation in power,” explained Fernando Huamán Flores, director of the CIOP.

Economic model
The study also listens to the perception of students—from a sample of 577—about the economic model and it is worth highlighting in this regard that 56% are convinced that the State should not assume the role of entrepreneur and 59% that it should not assume a subsidiary role either. Likewise, 83% state that it is essential that the State respect private property. On the other hand, 76% are in favor of introducing improvements in the economic model; Only 23% say that it should be changed completely.
Another topic addressed is that of insecurityand there 58% of those interviewed warned that, after being a victim of crime, the authorities were inefficient or indifferent to it.
