According to statistics up to January 2023, there are 2,498 inmates (women and men) who are being held in the Ayacucho maximum security prison, of which 1,217 are for drug trafficking, 539 for rape in its different modalities, 297 for aggravated robbery, 88 for homicide, 50 for criminal organization, 37 for kidnapping, 31 for feminicide and 65 for other crimes.
The capacity of the Ayacucho penitentiary center is designed for only 650 inmates, registering considerable overcrowding.
