We present some practical and simple recommendations that you can implement immediately to save energy in your home and significantly reduce your electricity bill.
Additionally, take into account that, when high temperatures are recorded, in Santa Cruz there are two consumption peaks during the day, the first starting at 3:00 p.m., and the second starting at 6:00 p.m., according to CRE. However, when the daytime temperature is ‘normal’, or when there are no heat waves, the peak of electrical energy consumption is only one, and it occurs after 6:00 p.m.
1. Optimize lighting:
Switch to LED: LED bulbs consume up to 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs, and last much longer.
Take advantage of natural light: Open curtains and blinds during the day to illuminate your home without having to turn on the lights.
Use motion sensors: Install motion sensors in areas such as hallways, bathrooms, and closets so that lights turn on only when needed.
2. Regulate the temperature
Prefer fans instead of air conditioning. But if you will use them, you should know that air conditioners are the ones that consume the most electrical energy. It is advisable to keep the temperature of this equipment between 23°C and 24°C and not leave it on when there are no people in the room, so that it remains cool when people return to the place. This practice constitutes a waste of electrical energy.
Insulate your home: Good thermal insulation will help you maintain a constant temperature in your home and reduce energy consumption.
3. Choose efficient appliances
Check the label: When purchasing new appliances, choose those that have a high energy efficiency label (A+++, A++ or A+).
Turn off devices: Unplug chargers from electronic devices, televisions and other devices when not in use, as they continue to consume power in standby mode.
4. Optimize the use of hot water
Reduce shower time: A shorter shower can save a significant amount of hot water.
5. Use appliances efficiently
Fill the washing machine: Avoid washing with a low load, as they consume more energy per garment.
Defrost food in the refrigerator: Defrosting food in the refrigerator instead of using the microwave or hot water will help you save energy.
