5 people die in shipwreck in Darién

Angel Valdes | February 18, 2023

Five people died and 13 were rescued by the National Border Service (Senafront) after their boat capsized early this Saturday, February 18, in the Punta Caracoles sector in the Jaqué community, Darién province.

According to the information provided by Senafront, the boat “El Patrón” left Puerto Piña bound for Puerto Quimba in the early hours of the morning with 18 people and at approximately 6:30 in the morning the shipwreck occurred due to the fact that the engine of the boat stopped working and the strong waves caused the ship to capsize.

The Primary Care Prosecutor’s Office went to the place to remove the corpses.

The regional Ministry of Health, through the Jaqué Health Center, provided care to the survivors, reporting that the majority suffered minor injuries, while the captain of the boat was transferred to the capital city for better treatment due to the blows suffered in head.
