Due to these terrifying figures and the apparent failure of the state of emergency in 14 districts of Lima, the authorities of the Executive Branch were consulted.

The Minister of the Interior, Juan José Santiváñez, for example, referred to the cruel murder of a teacher, indicating that this type of case cannot overshadow the work undertaken by his sector. “(With the case) it does not mean, at all, that we are not having any type of results”he assured.

In turn, Premier Gustavo Adrianzén, when asked if he should resign due to the number of deaths that are registered every day, pointed out that “If by taking a step aside there are no deaths, I will resign.”

“Look, if it were possible to guarantee that by taking a step aside, no one is going to die in Peru, I would do it (…) The plan is working with hundreds if not thousands of police and army personnel in the streets,” he questioned.

Nevertheless, He acknowledged that the results are not what was expected. “We do not stop believing that the results we are obtaining are good, but they are not the best and they are not what we are expecting,” he said.

In addition, He did not rule out expanding the state of emergency to other districts and that their security be assumed by the Armed Forces.

ANALYSIS

On the subject, Pedro Yaranga, a specialist in security issues, said that the state of emergency is not working.

He indicated to this newspaper that what is needed is to empower the Police and the justice system in the country. “All political support must be given to the interventions that the Police are going to carry out, as in other countries, because when the police kill a criminal, the Prosecutor’s Office denounces him,” he said.

He added that the Sinadef figures reflect a clear abandonment by the Government of security policies.

He added that the Minister of the Interior began a fairly good administration but then had a series of problems with the Police sector, which is not a good sign. ““The president should make changes with an Interior Minister who has a much more technical vision,” he posed.

Deaths

To date, Peru has recorded a total of 117,404 deaths nationwide from various causes, according to Sinadef.
