Moscow. Following Cuba’s announcement that it ran out of aircraft fuel, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov pointed out that the Russian government is seeking solutions together with the Cuban authorities to facilitate the return of Russian tourists vacationing in the largest of the Antilles and help overcome the crisis caused by the United States blockade.

“Both through diplomatic channels and other means we maintain intense contacts with Cuban friends,” explained Peskov. He described the situation in Cuba as “really critical.”

He noted that the “suffocating measures of the United States generate great difficulties” and asserted that Moscow and Havana “are studying possible ways to solve these problems or, at least, offer the help we can.”

The Union of the Russian Tourism Industry reported that there are about 4,700 Russian tourists on the island. Meanwhile, the Cuban government warned international airlines operating in the country that it will not be able to provide jet fuel to their planes for a month.

“We trust that Russian airlines will quickly find alternatives to refuel their planes. The embassy and consulate general in Havana are in permanent contact with the tour operators and Cuban aeronautical authorities,” reported the Russian diplomatic mission in Cuba through its Telegram account.

According to the Russian embassy in Cuba, “indeed we are aware that, for reasons of savings, cases of accommodation of our tourists in other lower category hotels are beginning to occur.” The UITR confirmed that seven luxury hotels in beach areas, such as Varadero – highly frequented by Russian tourists – were temporarily closed.
