MIAMI, United States. – The National Police of Honduras arrested this Thursday 45 cuban migrants and 11 alleged human traffickers who transported them in private cars, according to a statement of the Honduran entity.
According to that source, the arrest of migrants and suspects of human trafficking occurred in the village of Monte Verde, in the municipality of Santa Cruz de Yojoa, and was carried out by the Transnational Criminal Investigation Unit (UTIC) of the Police Investigations Directorate. (DPI) of that country.
The Cubans were transferred in private vehicles belonging to the 11 suspected Honduran traffickers or “coyotes,” the National Police said.
The Police seized from the alleged traffickers 11 cell phones of different makes and models, 11 vehicles, 21,000 lempiras (859 dollars) and other less significant amounts of US dollars, Cuban pesos, colones, Colombian pesos, cordobas, bolívares and Uruguayan pesos.
“LA UTIC works permanently in the location and identification of people and members of criminal gangs dedicated to the illicit trafficking of people and related crimes,” the Honduran Police said in their statement.
The Hondurans remained at the disposal of the authorities, who will determine their legal situation for committing the flagrant crime of illicit human trafficking, the Police said.
For their part, the Cubans were placed under the protection of the National Institute of Migration (INM), where the authorities will coordinate their return to their country or will authorize a safe conduct for them to continue their trip.
In recent decades, Honduras has become a transit point for immigrants, especially Cubans and Venezuelans, who cross Central American countries to try to reach the United States, according to the news agency EFE.
