4 million doses of the first batch of the Cuban Abdala vaccine arrive in Mexico

Almost a year after the Government of Mexico endorsed the application of the Cuban Abdala vaccine, this Friday its Ministry of Health confirmed the arrival of the first batch with more than four million doses.

In social networksthe head of health reported that the Hercules aircraft of the Mexican Air Force landed at the Felipe Ángeles International Airport, in the state of Zumpango, with a batch of 4,092,500 drugs that will be used to immunize adults.

This is the first delivery of a purchase of nine of the Cuban antidote, although at that time the López Obrador Administration said that part of the vaccines would be applied to children between 5 and 11 years of age.

The Mexican Government authorized in December 2021 the emergency use of the Abdala vaccine, developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of Cuba, through its Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris), despite the fact that the drug has not yet received endorsement from the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the Mexican Ministry of Health, since December 2020, your country has received 193,231,825 vaccines from the manufacturers Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca and Sinovac, as well as Sputnik V, CanSino, Moderna and Janssen.

The Mexican regulator also authorized on November 19 the emergency use of Cuban vaccines Soberana and Soberana Pluswhich are also not recognized by the WHO.

Last April, the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology delivered the files to the WHO to certify the two Cuban drugs, with a long delay in the documentation for Abdala due, as justified by the Government, to the change in the production site. The guarantee has not yet arrived, and neither the Ministry of Health nor the official press have updated the information on this matter.

In addition to Mexico, other countries that have purchased the vaccines are Iran, co-producer of Soberana (known as PastoCorona in that territory), as well as Venezuela, Nicaragua and Belarus. However, neither has disclosed the unit cost of the doses.

Since Manuel López Obrador came to power, Mexico began a growing rapprochement with Cuba and has become an important ally not only for the speech reproaching the United States for its immigration policies, but also for hiring doctors from the island to work in remote and dangerous areas, delivery of donations, and a possible purchase of Cuban gravel to finish his mammoth and controversial Mayan Train in the Yucatan peninsula.
