35,625 homicides are recorded in Mexico in 2021, almost 70% with a firearm

In the case of women, the rate of 6 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants registered in 2020 was maintained during 2021.

Of the 35,625 deaths by homicide registered during 2021, according to preliminary figures from Inegi, 24,384 were caused by some type of firearm. That is, 68.7% of the total homicides.

Zacatecas was one of the entities where homicides increased the most, going from registering 1,244, in 2020, to 1,776 during 2021. With these figures, the entity reached the highest homicide rate in Mexico, of 109 per 100,000 inhabitants.

In this entity, governed by the morenista David Monreal, the violence is allegedly caused by a confrontation between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel. And there have been cases of forced displacement in various communities, derived from organized crime.

Zacatecas is followed by Baja California, Colima and Chihuahua with homicide rates of 86, 82 and 73 per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively.
