“31 countries met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to discuss our serious concerns about the urgent situation in Venezuela and reiterate our support for respect for democratic principles and the defense of human rights in the country,” it was stated in the pronouncement of this Thursday, September 26.
They also noted that they applaud the Venezuelan people for their participation in the July 28 presidential election despite the significant challenges. «More than 12 million people went to the polls and exercised their right to vote. However, almost two months have passed since the election, and the demands for electoral transparency from both Venezuelans and the international community remain unanswered,” the countries noted.
They recalled that international election observers documented serious concerns about the transparency and integrity of the electoral process, “in particular the refusal of the National Electoral Council to publish detailed and verifiable results independently of the voting centers, as required.”

On the other hand, the 31 countries requested the release of political prisoners. «We call on the limmediate release of those who have been arbitrarily detained without respecting the guarantees of a fair trial. It is essential that Venezuelans are allowed to express their political opinions peacefully, including the exercise of freedom of assembly and peaceful expression, without fear of reprisals. “We call for an end to the use of excessive force, political violence and harassment against the opposition and civil society,” they indicated.
