“300,000 people cannot be deported to Cuba”: Marcos Rubio on the I220A

AREQUIPA, Peru – Cuban-American Senator Marco Rubio addressed the immigration limbo of the more than 300,000 Cubans with I-220ª in the United States, an issue related to the deportation measures announced by Donald Trump if he wins the presidential elections on December 5. November.

“If there were not a criminal group taking over what Venezuela is today, if you did not have a Castro regime, which has basically driven all young people out of the country, because there are no opportunities or hope for a future, and there would not be the crisis that exists in Haiti, the immigration problem of this country is reduced by 60%,” the Florida politician told the channel Telemundo 51.

In statements offered in Washington, Rubio pointed out that the current situation is “chaos” caused by Castroism. Likewise, he stated that no country in the world has the conditions to receive millions of people.

“The problem is that there is nowhere to deport them because you cannot deport 300,000 people to Cuba and if you do they will return,” added the vice president of the intelligence committee in the Senate chamber.

Last week Trump announced that, if he returns to the White House, he will eliminate the program parole humanitarian regime established by the Biden administration in January 2023, as well as the possibility of entering the country through the application CBP One.

During a telephone interview with journalist Bill Melugin of Fox News, Trump was clear in his message to immigrants who have arrived under these two programs: “Prepare to leave,” he said.

Trump also harshly criticized Joe Biden’s immigration policy: he assured that “the border is full of illegal immigrants, people who should not be in our country.” Furthermore, he insisted that, if elected president, quick and firm measures will be taken to expel those who entered under this program, especially if they have a criminal record: “Prepare to leave, especially quickly if they are criminals…”.

The I-220A document represents a legal limbo for Cubans in the United States. In practice, it is a provisional release order that the US Government offers to people who were detained by the immigration authorities and were later released, but it does not grant the right to its holders to request residence in the country, nor to take advantage of the benefits of the Cuban Adjustment Act or humanitarian parole.
