3-3: Independiente de Medellín avoids defeat against Guaireña in extremis

The Colombian Independiente Medellín saved the furniture by equalizing 3-3 in extremis with Guaireña this Thursday in the first day of Group E of the Copa Sudamericana, which is completed by Internacional and Nueve de Octubre.

The local team went ahead on the scoreboard with a goal from Mario Otazu at 6 minutes, but the DIM reacted in the same first half with goals from Pons, at minute 33, and Arregui at 38 in the game that was played at the Defensores del Chaco stadium in Asunción.

For the complementary period, Guaireña came out with a better attitude and equalized 2-2 through Pablo Ayala in the 56th minute.

The luck that at first was on Guaireña’s side and then seemed elusive when DIM went up on the scoreboard, was once again on the side of the ‘Greatest of the Interior’, as they call the Paraguayan club, when Juan Arboleda, defender of the Independiente Medellín scored an own goal in the 65th minute to make it 3-2.

When everyone thought that Guaireña would achieve victory, Independiente Medellín showed their pride and at 91 minutes Juan Manuel Cuesta, a 20-year-old midfielder, brought them back to life by scoring the third goal to score the final 3-3.

Despite the tie, the team coached by Trodio Duarte, founded just six years ago, stood up and showed hierarchy against their 108-year-old rival in their first match for zone E of the tournament.

With today’s result, Independiente Medellín, led by Uruguayan Julio Comesaña, leads group E with 1 point, the same as Guaireña, Brazilian Internacional and Ecuadorian Nueve de Octubre.
