The flamingorunner-up of the Libertadores Cup of 2021, won this Tuesday 3-1 at Cordoba Workshops Argentinian at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro and alone assumed first place in Group H of the tournament.
In a match on the second day of the group stage, the most popular club in Brazil easily beat an Argentine debutant with two goals from Éverton Ribeiro and a penalty from Gabriel Barbosa ‘Gabigol’, while Talleres discounted the end of the first half through Héctor Fértoli, who took advantage of a mistake by the local defense.
Flamengo has six points from two games. The first was won 0-2 by Sporting Crital last week in Lima. It surpasses the Chileans from the Catholic University and Talleres, who have the same 3 points, in the classification.
With an improvised defense led by David Luiz and Filipe Luis, the team led by the Portuguese Paulo Sousa began with defensive problems and let the Argentine team take the initiative in the first few minutes.
But the newly signed goalkeeper Santos, in his first match as a Flamengo player, took on the responsibility of guaranteeing the team’s peace of mind at the back. The Rio de Janeiro team needed six minutes to react and to take control of the match, guided mainly by the Uruguayan creative Giorgian de Arrascaeta, the best player of the match.
A foul on De Arrascaeta generated the penalty that ‘Gabigol’ scored in the 10th minute. It was the striker’s eleventh goal of the season and number 23 in the Libertadores, making him the club’s top scorer in the tournament.
Flamengo used the advantage to pressurize but only managed to extend after 25 minutes when Éverton Ribeiro took advantage of an assist from Bruno Henrique.
An error in Flamengo’s questionable defense in the last minute of the first half allowed Fértoli to discount after a play by Federico Girotti, who assisted him with his heel.
In the second half, as well as in the initial stage, Talleres began pressing to try to surprise at the Maracana and fellow Portuguese coach Pedro Caixinha oxygenated the attack with the entry of strikers Veloyes and Michael Santos.
His audacity cost him dearly again because in the 14th minute Éverton Ribero, again assisted by Bruno Henrique, scored the third. Goalkeeper Guido Herrera prevented Flamengo from widening the score by saving shots from Andrea Pereira and Arrascaeta.
With the wide lead, Flamengo began to play more calmly and carry more and more danger, but Sousa decided to rest his two attackers and sent Pedro and Marinho into the game to replace Gobigol and Bruno Henrique.
The youthful Pedro took the opportunity to once again show his dangerousness but Herrera ended up preventing him from expanding the score, but he did not prevent the party of the 42,915 Flamengo fans who attended the Maracana today.
