28 femicides in Ecuador since the beginning of 2022

En Ecuador ha ocurrido un feminicidio cada 54 horas en lo que va del año 2022.

‘#8M nothing to celebrate’ is the phrase with which Fundación Aldea presented data on femicides this year.

In Ecuador, the situation of sexist violence does not change; on the contrary, it is increasing and it is worrying.

From January 1 to March 5, 2022 have already occurred 28 femicides, transfemicides and violent deaths from women for organized crime.

Of the 28 registered cases, 14 correspond to femicides (50%)2 are transfemicides (7%) and 12 cases correspond to violent deaths from women by organized crime.

In 11 of the 24 provinces there has been at least one femicide so far this year, 50% more than in the same period as in 2021.

The most violent provinces

The province of Guayas maintains its condition of being the province that presents the highest figures of femicides in the country: so far in 2022, it already presents 7 cases. Manabí is in second place with 5 cases; Los Ríos with 4 cases; Emeralds 3; El Oro and Imbabura with 2; and, Cotopaxi, Loja, Napo, Orellana and Pichincha with one case each. Of the 2 cases of transfemicides reported, 1 occurred in the province of Guayas and another in Cotopaxi.

As civil society organizations we are committed to making visible all forms of femicide. From 2021, we show that there are new features of the violent deaths of women due to femicidal violencebecause when the dispute between criminal gangs is expressed through the cruel exercise of patriarchal and misogynistic violence against women’s bodies is also femicide.

These show that in the country there has been a femicide every 54 hours so far in 2022.

Relationship with the victim

From the information available up to the date of this report, it is known that in the 86% of the cases, the femicides had a sentimental bond with the victim and in 14% they had no relationship with them.

From 2014 to the present, we have already registered 1,075 femicides

These first months of the year 2022 show a 50% increase in cases in relation to the same period in the year 2021, which alarms us deeply since 2021 was the most violent year for women and girls in Ecuador and in 2022 the figures are even higher.

Victims who were mothers and orphan status

From the information available in 2022, it is known that at least 9 women were mothers, leaving at least 19 children and adolescents in an orphan situation. These are invisible victims who sometimes become witnesses to the brutal crime against their mother. They and they require attention, protection and urgent comprehensive repair.

weapon type

In 68% of the cases, the femicides they were committed with the use of firearms, in 11% white weapons were used and with the same percentage the use of the hands as a weapon was recorded to end the lives of women.

Aid ticket and history of violence

It is known that at least 3 of the 28 women had previously reported a history of violence and one of them had a ticket for help. The protection system continues to fail for women and impunity continues to be normal in our country. (AVV)
