The relatives of the military prisoners reported that the prison guards warned them of “a little surprise” and that the common prisoners threatened them with kidnapping, after these detainees protested to demand medical attention for a fellow prisoner.

27 military prisoners in the Military Trial and Penalty Center (Cepropemil) of Charallave, Miranda state, began a hunger strike this Monday, October 21, to demand security inside the cells because they have been threatened by common prisoners of being kidnapped and were also warned by the custodians of receiving “a little surprise.”

Sandra Hernández, wife of Sergeant Luis Bandres, explained that these detainees began the hunger strike due to several situations, including threats of kidnapping by common prisoners, which she describes as “highly dangerous” and due to intimidation by the center’s guards. of confinement.

Hernández said she was concerned about the precarious conditions of the detention center and denounced General Luis Marcel Ojeda Araujo; to the director, Colonel José Manuel Bello Pérez; and Major Adán Andre Abad Zambrano, for anything that may happen to her husband and the other detainees.

The wife of Third Sergeant Major Geomer Martínez (detained for the Cotiza case) assured that she fears “for the physical integrity and life of my husband and his companions.” He explained that the insecurity situation increased after the detainees protested to request medical attention for a detained police officer who fell from a bunk bed, which is known as “the grave,” and the injured detainee was only given a pill.

Martínez’s wife stated that the guards indicated that the detainees would receive “a little surprise” for having protested.

Like Sandra Hernández, she holds the campus authorities responsible for anything that may happen to these soldiers who went on hunger strike to demand their rights.

On the other hand, Dilienyi Escalona, sister of second sergeant Édgar Jesús Díaz Cárdenas, another of the officials detained in Cepropemil, also made a video in which she holds the director of the center responsible for the life of her relative and the other prisoners, Luis Ojeda, and the other authorities in charge of the center after threatening them with “a little surprise.”

The relative of Sergeant Díaz Cárdenas also reported that on October 17, a riot occurred in which “civilians, highly dangerous subjects, tried to attack the officials (prisoners) and threatened them with a second riot to attack the prisoners.” politicians.

Likewise, Leandry Rivero also held the authorities responsible for what may happen to the soldiers detained for the Cotiza uprising. He asked for minimum guarantees for these political prisoners, as well as for their physical and mental health needs to be met.

24 soldiers revolted in January 2019 and tried to forcibly take over the command of the Cotiza National Guard to ignore President Nicolás Maduro in the midst of a wave of anti-government demonstrations, but due to the failure of their movement, they received sentences of up to 15 years in prison.

Sergeant Major Luis Bandres, who led the attempt, was sentenced to fifteen years and nine months in prison for “riot” and “instigation.” The others received sentences of seven years and nine months.

The relatives of these soldiers have reported on several occasions that the uniformed men have been victims of torture during their detention, which includes beatings with baseball bats or the application of electric shocks.
