MIAMI, United States. — A group of 25 Cuban migrants, including seven children, arrived in Key West on Monday, the United States Border Patrol (USBP) reported.
The Cubans were intercepted by US agents shortly after making landfall aboard a wooden fishing boat labeled Rio Azul.
The information was released on Twitter by Miami Sector Patrol Chief Walter N. Slosar.
“25 migrants from Cuba were taken into Border Patrol custody this morning after making landfall on a wooden fishing boat in Key West. There are seven minors accompanied by relatives in the group. No injuries were reported,” the officer said. Twitter.
According to a report from the television network WPLG (Local 10)the group is expected to be repatriated to Cuba in the coming days.
The migratory wave of Cubans trying to reach the United States has skyrocketed over the last year. To the more than 140,000 who have arrived through the southern border between October 2021 and May 2022, there are thousands more who have managed to reach the northern country through the Florida Strait, although most have been deported.
This Monday, the Cuban Ministry of the Interior (MININT) reported of the shipwreck of a boat that set sail from the north coast of the province of Mayabeque on June 20 with 15 people on board and that sank the next day on the high seas.
A note from that body indicates that it was a vessel “not suitable for navigation” and that, according to one of the survivors, the group’s objective was “to leave the country.” So far, only six of the 15 people have been found.
