At least 24 people died this Saturday in the Peruvian region of Piura, north of Lima, when a bus with 60 passengers on board fell off a cliff at dawn, for unknown reasons, the Peruvian National Police (PNP) reported. .
Police officers who arrived at the scene told local media that The accident occurred in an area of difficult maneuverability, at kilometer 121 of the Panamericana Norte, known as “Curva del Diablo” and that they are waiting for the Prosecutor’s Office to identify the deceased and injured, the AFP news agency indicated.
The PNP investigates the causes of the accident and presumes that the driver lost control of the vehicle in a section with a steep slope due to the darkness of the night.
The deceased were transferred to the Talara morgue waiting to be identified.
The vehicle of the transport company Q’orianka Tours Águila Dorada, left Lima and was headed to Tumbes, on the border with Ecuador, but he left the highway in a desert area, in the section that joins the El Alto region with the town of Órganos, in the province of Talara, when he had 260 kilometers to go before reaching his destination.
After learning what happened, personnel from the Police and the fire company arrived at the scene to support the rescue efforts and transport the injured to different clinics in the province of Talara. Meanwhile, the fatalities were taken to the central morgue in Talara.
The accident was confirmed by the Superintendence of Land Transport (SUTRAN), which clarified in a statement that the vehicle had all the documents in order and authorized to provide service.
“SUTRAN activated all the intervention protocols, coordinating in an articulated manner with the competent authorities in order to gather information related to the accident,” the institution said.
An unknown number of people were injured and were taken to hospitals in El Alto and Máncora, popular summer resorts in Peru, on the road to Piura, some 1,000 km north of Lima.
Several passengers were thrown out of the windows and others were trapped inside the vehicle.
