The Purchasing and Contracts Manager of HudbayClaudia Asca reported that as of June, 23% of its suppliers are local companies. These businesses provide up to six different types of services to the Constancia mine located in Cusco.

The services that local companies are providing to the company are personnel transportation; rental of auxiliary equipment; gardening, laundry, cleaning and kiosk service; infrastructure and equipment maintenance; industrial cleaning at the plant; and transportation of concentrate.
In this last service, one of the most important within the logistics chain, there are two local companies that transport up to 35% of the copper concentrate.
Asca recalled the actions that Hudbay has promoted to achieve this level of participation of local companies in its operations, starting in 2022, such as support for the development of consortia in the communities; the implementation of constant training on compliance issues; the modification of the mining company’s procedural framework for the participation of companies in the communities, among other actions.
In the same vein, the mining company’s executive considered it essential that contractors include sustainable development proposals that involve making alliances with the community, which may include a possible transfer of knowledge, for example. “One of our objectives is to ensure that the communities’ capacities are sustainable over time,” she added.
Asca also commented that one of the latest actions carried out by the mining company has been to carry out a census in the community of Uchucarcco (Chumbivilcas province), located in its area of influence, in which some 150 professionals have been identified, including technicians and university graduates from different specialties, which will facilitate greater development of local employability. “We are making this database available to contracting companies, so that they can see the possibility of working together with them,” he said.
