What taxes will World Cup players pay?
During the World Cup 2026the Footballers who reside abroad will pay taxes in Mexico, but under specific rules designed exclusively for the tournament. This is not a general charge or taxing all your income, but only those that are generated by your participation in the World Cup and that are linked to activities carried out in Mexican territory.
It is important to consider that, according to the article 170 of the Income Tax Law athletes residing abroad who obtain income from participating in sporting events in Mexico are subject to a 25% ISRapplied to the part of the income that corresponds to the matches played in the country.

They must pay ISR for 100% of income that they obtain for their participation in the tournament, in accordance with the current general rate, which is progressive and depends on the total amount they receive.
Taking these rates into account, this is how the payment will be for players participating in the World Cup:
-They will only pay ISR (Income Tax), not other taxes.
-The tax will be applied only to the money they earn from the World Cup, that is:
-Your payment for participating with your country’s team.
-The cash prizes they receive during the tournament.
