MIAMI, United States. — The International Institute of Race, Equality and Human Rights (Race and Equality) displayed 200 posters in Buenos Aires (Argentina) in favor of the release of the political prisoners in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela prior to the Community of Latin American States (CELAC) Summit, which will take place in the South American country.
Fernando Goldar, legal consultant for Race and Equality, explained to CubaNet that the initiative arose from the possibility that Miguel Díaz-Canel, Daniel Ortega and Nicolás Maduro -he announced that he would not attend for security reasons- would attend the CELAC Summit in the capital of Argentina, which will mark the closure of the presidency pro tempore of that country at the head of the regional bloc.
According to Goldar, the posters were distributed near the Sheraton Hotel in Buenos Aires, which will host the main activities of the Summit.
“In Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela there are more than 1,000 political prisoners. They remain in prison for defending their rights,” says one of the billboards displayed in the city.
The activist pointed out that, due to the indifference of some Argentine civil society organizations, there are initiatives to highlight, such as the one launched by Raza e Igualdad.
Goldar recalled that although CELAC membership allows the leaders of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela to attend the Summit, the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, could have made the decision not to invite the dictators.
During the last Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles (United States), Race and Equality deployed two posters denouncing the repression, harassment, arbitrary arrests and attacks suffered by activists, independent journalists, artists and human rights defenders in Cuba.
