After seven years had elapsed since the kidnapping and murder of a journalist from La Romana, José Silvestre, the Collegiate Court of San Pedro de Macorís, sentenced to 20 years in prison Matias Avelino Castro, main accused of being the intellectual author of that crime.
Against Castro, who must comply with the measure in the Anamuya prison, La Altagracia province, the payment of 100 minimum wages was also imposed as a measure.

Jose Agustin Silvestre Maldonadowas kidnapped and murdered on August 2, 2011, an act in which six individuals belonging to a gang led by the convicted Matías Avelino Castro participated, according to the Public Ministry.
The man sentenced today, after committing the crime, fled taking refuge in Colombia, but was located and arrested by the authorities of that country in response to a request made by the Attorney General’s Office of the Dominican Republic.
ANDn the trial, Avelino Castro was also accused and convicted of money laundering.
The Public Ministry also requested that the properties of the now condemned be confiscated, but this request was rejected by the court on the grounds that it lacked legal basis, since most of the title certificates were not in his name, except for two parcels located in Monte Plata, which were confiscated.
