With various activities, social, political, cultural and neighborhood organizations will remember this weekend Maximiliano Kosteki and Darío Santillán, the two young men from the MTD Aníbal Verón, on the 20th anniversary of their murder on Sunday, in a historic event known as the ” Avellaneda massacre.

The Union of Workers of the Popular Economy (Utep) holds an act this Saturday at the Pueyrredón Bridge, with the slogan “20 years after the Avellaneda massacre: Darío and Maxi present”.

“They were two companions who marked with their lives an example of commitment to the humblest, which the entire popular movement would later take as a banner,” they recalled from the Utep.

“The fight for work, dignity and social change back then is today’s fight for Land, Roof and Work (TTT). For this reason, today more than ever, Darío and Maxi live in the popular economy,” Dina told Télam Sánchez deputy secretary of the Utep and referent of the Darío Santillán Popular Front (FPDS).

On June 26, 2002, Darío and Maxi were murdered in the vicinity and in the hall of the former Avellaneda station -which today bears the name of the murdered youths by law- of the Roca Railway, after a brutal repression in which the forces of Buenos Aires security fired lead bullets at those who had taken to the streets to demand “decent work, food and work plans” in the context of the economic and social crisis of 2001.

The ex-policemen of the province, Alfredo Fanchiotti and Alejandro Acostamaterial authors of the murder of Darío and Maxi were sentenced in December 2005 to life imprisonment.

“However -they added from the Utep- we continue to demand that the politicians responsible for the Avellaneda massacre- be investigated and tried”.

The murder of Kosteki and Santillán at the hands of members of the Buenos Aires Police marked a milestone in Argentine society, which “forced then President Eduardo Duhalde to bring forward the elections and marked a consensus floor in society rejecting police repression “.

Meanwhile, from the Independent Justice Commission for Darío and Maxi -made up of various left-wing social organizations- announced activities for this Saturday and Sunday, to “remember Darío and Maxi and demand complete justice” for those responsible for the murders.

This sector plans to set up four stages on Saturday for a webcast of almost ten hours, of a political-cultural day to be held both at the train station and at the Pueyrredón Bridge, all in the Buenos Aires town of Avellaneda.

“Also, there will be conversations, musical bands and public interviews,” Juan Pablo Nocelli, historical leader of the MTD Aníbal Verón, told Télam.

As announced, the broadcast of the sector will take place this Saturday from 4:00 p.m. on the YouTube channel of Antena Negra TV or the Facebook of Darío and Maxi Station, an activity that will be accompanied by a “vigil” on the Pueyrredón Bridge.

While, on Sunday they will hold a rally at the former Avellaneda station and starting at 12, they will march to the Pueyrredón Bridge, where they will carry out an act under the motto: “Complete justice for our compañeros Darío Santillán and Maximiliano Kosteki.”

The Independent Justice Commission for Darío and Maxi is a group formed by the relatives and companions of Darío Santillán and Maximiliano Kosteki; human rights organizations, personalities of art, culture; the thought, the social movements, and independent militancy that, “from different sectors of popular construction, fight for justice and against impunity in Argentina,” as reported on their social networks.

For his part, the Worker-Trend Pole The Darío Santillán and Maximiliano Kosteki Station will be mobilized on Sunday to “vindicate the struggle of the unemployed and the workers,” spokesmen for the Trotkist organization informed this agency.

“The struggle of the relatives, of the piquetero, human rights and political organizations, brought the material authors of the murders of Darío and Maxi to jail. The political leaders of the murders of Kosteki and Santillán are still at large and several continued holding positions in successive governments”, they announced and demanded “prison for all those responsible for the Avellaneda Massacre”.
