The scorer Juan Cruz Mascia guided this Tuesday to Colonia Square to a 2-0 win over The Stonestthe first in its history in the Libertadores Cup which leaves him closer to Phase 3. Mascia scored his ‘double’ at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo in the first part of the match. The series between the Uruguayan team and the Bolivian team will be defined on March 1 in La Paz.
With high pressure and good collective play, Plaza Colonia dominated a game from the start that was made easier by the expulsion of Cristian Esparza after 33 minutes.
Earlier, after a corner kick and a header from Leandro Suhr that found a huge response from goalkeeper Germán Viscarra, Mascia connected the ball and decreed the first goal when a little more than a quarter of an hour had been played.
Eduardo Espinel’s pupils kept up the pressure on the team from La Paz. In 2016, Espinel transformed Plaza Colonia into the ‘Uruguayan Leicester’ by winning the Clausura Tournament at the same time that the English team added one victory after another.
On Tuesday, the coach signed another historic day with the team with which he also won the 2021 Opening Tournament. At 39 minutes, after Luciano Ursino touched the ball with his hand inside the area, Mascia scored a penalty to make it 2-0, a result with which he concluded a first half in which his rival only came close with a good shot from Rodrigo Amaral.
At the start of the second half, referee Bruno Arleu sanctioned a new penalty for Plaza Colonia, which this time was finished off by Nicolás Dibble. However, the change of player did not go well for the local team because the number 11 shot was saved by goalkeeper Viscarra.
Towards the end, the locals approached the rival goal again, although the lack of aim did not allow them to increase the score, which closed with a 2-0.
