A group of 18 Democratic congressmen from the United States requested, in a letter addressed to President Joe Biden, that the sanctions on Venezuela be lifted as they consider that they “exacerbate the humanitarian situation.”
The letter, dated Tuesday, May 10, recognizes the efforts of the Biden administration “towards a constructive engagement with the government of Venezuela.” In particular, the talks to achieve the release of two Citgo executives stand out, in addition to the apparent commitment to restart the negotiation between Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan opposition in Mexico.
Despite the recognition of Maduro and his allies as the main responsible for the country’s humanitarian and political crisis, US congressmen assure that the sanctions imposed by former President Donald Trump “not only failed to improve the situation in Venezuela, but also significantly exacerbated it.” ”.
