Madrid Spain.- A total of 18 Cuban rafters were arrested this Wednesday after making landfall in the Marquesas Keys, an uninhabited island west of Key West, Florida.

After being stranded on the island, they were rescued by the United States Coast Guard (USCG), reported the head of the United States Border Patrol in Miami, Walter N. Slosar.

As specified by Slosar through the social network Twitter, the Caribbean migrants, who arrived on a wooden boat, “were taken into custody” and were placed at the disposal of the corresponding migration agencies.

Last weekend, 187 Cuban rafters were arrested after reaching the shores of the United States. These 187 Cubans were arrested in just two days, and arrived in the country in ten different groups. In the largest landing there were 51 people.

Also this week, the repatriation of 107 Cuban rafters that had been intercepted by Coast Guard agents in nine rescue operations near the Florida coast was revealed.

According to official data, the number of Cubans intercepted at sea since last October (beginning of this fiscal year) exceeded 4,000.

Regarding migration by land, a total of 177 848 Cubans arrived in the United States from the same date to the close of July 2022.

According to a recent report issued by the Department of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), this figure represents a migratory record of Cubans to the United States and an increase of 20,496 Caribbeans who arrived in the northern country through areas border areas, mostly with Mexico (20,099), last July.
