17 Cubans escape from a Mexican immigration station in Piedras Negras after a riot

Raysel López Matos, José Luis Rodríguez López, Yarisleydi Matos and Raúl are part of the group of 17 Cubans who this Sunday escaped from the Piedras Negras immigration station, located 150 meters from the border crossing that connects with Eagle Pass (USA), confirmed a 14ymedio a Beta Group source. “Nearly 100 migrants escaped after the riot recorded this morning.”

At the time of the riot, about 300 migrants from Cuba, Nicaragua, Colombia, Venezuela, Honduras and El Salvador were crowded into an improvised place for 80 people. Fearing that they would be sent to Tabasco for deportation, “a group set fire to the mats and broke down the door to escape,” the lifeguard mentions.

For the authorities of the Ministry of Public Security, what happened in the immigration offices near the International Bridge II was “an altercation” in which migrants “set fire to three mattresses.” The people who showed signs of “intoxication” were treated at the scene and only one person had injuries that “are not life-threatening.”

The migrants were taken to the Beto Estrada municipal gymnasium, located on Morelos street, in Piedras Negras.

The migratory station is located inside the building of the National Assets Administration Institute, where they adapted spaces for offices of various state agencies, the Beta rescuers group and on the ground floor spaces were enabled to keep migrants.

“The place is overrun,” acknowledges the rescuer. “With the Mirror Operative that Coahuila and Texas implemented last April, people are being detained, but for every 900 you arrest, 1,000 or more people cross the Rio Grande.

Data shared by the United States Border Patrol to Grupo Beta, indicate that between Sunday and Monday They went through the Rio Grande to Eagle Pass, 631 migrants. “In 30 hours, almost half of that group stands out, 310, they were Cubans. Where were they? How did they get there? The network of coyotes continues to dominate this area,” the source tells 14ymedio.

During the current fiscal year, from October 1, 2021 to March 31, Del Rio Sector agents have apprehended 195,289 migrants.

The rescuer also disclosed to 14ymedio that the body of Cuban Miguel Matamoros Cagides, who drowned after being dragged down the Rio Grande, remains unclaimed by his relatives. “His identity was confirmed by his clothes, but no one has come forward for the paperwork.”

A relative from Matamoros told this newspaper that they intend to return the body of the young man to the Island, but they are asked at the Mexican embassy on the Island to know “exactly” the place where it is located and it will depend on that, to define if the transfer can be done.
