162 migrants were rescued by the Spanish maritime rescue services this Sunday, June 19. The group includes several minors who were reached when they tried to reach the Spanish coast in various precarious boats.
Most of the rescued migrants are of sub-Saharan and Moroccan origin.
As reported EFE, Of the group of migrants, 86 were heading to the island of Gran Canaria, 55 to Lanzarote – both in the Spanish Atlantic archipelago of the Canary Islands -, while another 21 were heading to the autonomous cities of Melilla and Ceuta, in North Africa, reported emergency services.
The so-called Atlantic route, which transports immigrants from the African coasts to the Canary Islands, the first European soil they find, is considered the deadliest of all migratory routes. Likewise, the migrants who venture into it are exposed to long journeys in the open ocean, which frequently exceed 450 kilometers and, sometimes, are around 800 or even 1,000.
In 2022, according to data from the Ministry of Interior, 28,930 irregular migrants arrived by sea and 15,682 of them used the Atlantic route.
In the elapsed months of 2023, the arrival of migrants in Spain has decreased by 44% compared to the previous year, and almost half of them arrived on the coasts of the Canary Islands (2,376).
