Today, as the world commemorates International Women’s Day, it could be a day to celebrate for Nicaraguans, but among other hardships they suffer, 16 have had their lives taken away.

The organization Catholics for the Right to Decide (CDD) denounced that eight women have been murdered in Nicaragua and another 8 abroad. They all died violently. The wave of sexist violence has also left 15 orphaned minors.

The report from the organization’s Observatory reflected that Costa Rica is the main country where the majority of femicides of Nicaraguans have been registered from January 1 to March 8, 2023, registering four deaths. The United States is the second country with the most femicides of Nicaraguans. At least three have been murdered so far this year, followed by Guatemala, where another Nicaraguan woman lost her life at the hands of her spouse.

The report detailed that seven women victims of sexist violence range from 18 to 34 years old; nine between the ages of 35 and 59, the report detailed. At least four of the crimes occurred in the public sphere, while the other 12, in the private sphere, that is, inside the houses.

In most cases of femicide, the aggressors are acquaintances, partners or ex-partners.

In all cases of femicide registered in Nicaragua, little access to justice is reported. According to the Observatory, of the cases, one is under investigation; three in judicial process; four in legal proceedings abroad; two with impunity in Nicaragua and four with impunity abroad.

As a way to evade justice, the report indicates that two of the femicides in Nicaragua committed suicide after committing the crime.
