159 dead and more than 400 injured in traffic accidents in December

A total of 159 deaths and 425 injuries left the 367 traffic accidents recorded in December 2025 alone, according to a report from the Road Safety Observatory (OSV) in alliance with the Zoom Foundation.

“The statistics reflected an alarming lethality: for every 100 incidents, 43 people lost their lives. The gender gap was overwhelming, since men represented 82.4% of the fatalities (131 deaths compared to 28 women),” said Rosibel González, OSV coordinator.

Reckless drivers, the main trigger

The study points to a clear culprit: human behavior. In 92% of cases with a determined cause, the responsibility fell on the drivers. Excessive speed was the most common violation, with 217 reports, followed by incompetence (60 cases) and alcohol consumption. Mechanical failures, on the other hand, were only present in 3.55% of the accidents.

Motorcyclists, the most vulnerable

Motorcycles were involved in more than half of the accidents (55.87%). The fatality in this group was especially high: 65% of those who died were motorists or their companions. Additionally, young people between the ages of 20 and 29 topped the list of injuries, which the report said represents a significant loss to the country’s workforce.

Avenues and weekends

The analysis identified worrying patterns. Urban avenues accounted for 34% of the accidents. During the week, the accidents were linked to the daily routine, with collisions and accidents in the morning hours. But on weekends the panorama changed: skids and road departures increased, associated with excess speed and alcohol consumption, especially at night and early in the morning.

An x-ray built with more than 400 sources

To prepare the report, the OSV processed information from 437 sources, including the media, social networks and reports from rescue groups. The data was organized by type of road, role of the road actor and time zone, which made it possible to identify the most critical moments for safety on Venezuelan roads.
