13 regional governors give their support to the Approval: “We are beginning to lay the foundations for the roadmap on which we are already working”

13 of the Regional Governors stated that they were in favor of the Approval in the next exit plebiscite, scheduled for this Sunday, September 4.

“As Governors of Chile, we firmly believe in the decentralization of the country, granting new powers and resources from the National Government to the Regional Governments, to achieve higher levels of autonomy. Centralism is enshrined since the 1833 Constitution, which implements the figure of the Portalian State, which with an iron hand sought to impose order and control over the entire territory. This has been the main defect of the order in force up to now: its unrestricted commitment to the status quo,” the signatories indicate.

Along these lines, they add that “therefore, in our role we cannot be oblivious or oblivious to the historic event that we have next Sunday, September 4, since the New Constitution Proposal gives us guarantees, in more than 60 articles on the form of State, in detail, the establishment of autonomous territorial entities that transit from the region to the commune and that establish a renewed type of decentralized and regional State”.

“In the Proposal for a New Constitution, Chile is recognized as a single and indivisible territory, defined as a regional State, which ensures an adequate balance between regional and communal autonomy and territorial unity. Democracy is strengthened at the different regional and local levels , to the extent that its main bodies are not only fully elected through universal suffrage, but also integrate citizens in their decision-making processes,” they add.

“With the New Constitution we begin to lay the foundations for the roadmap, on which we are already working, to grant powers to regional governments in a collaborative and dialogic manner. Our neighbors tell us in the territory that their trust is with the authorities and that forces us to continue playing for the autonomy of the regions”, they close.

The declaration is signed by the following governors: Andrea Macias (Aysén), Cristina Bravo (Maule), Ricardo Díaz (Antofagasta), Jorge Flies (Magallanes), Miguel Vargas (Atacama), José Miguel Carvajal (Tarapacá), Patricio Vallespín (Los Lagos), Pablo Silva (O’higgins), Krist Naranjo (Coquimbo), Rodrigo Mundaca (Valparaíso), Luís Cuvertino (Los Ríos), Oscar Crisóstomo (Ñuble), and Claudio Orrego (Metropolitana de Santiago).

Meanwhile, the letter was not signed by Jorge Díaz (Arica and Parinacota), Luciano Rivas (Araucanía) and Rodrigo Díaz (Bío Bío).
