Presos, reclusos, Cuba

Havana Cuba. – From the most rigorous Combinado del Este penitentiary center, in the Havana municipality of Guanabacoa, the 12J protester Osvaldo Lugo Pita denounces the lack of medicines and medical assistance, the poor quality of food, as well as other violations perpetrated against the inmates by the authorities of the largest prison facility in the country.

Through a phone call, Lugo Pita announced that the menu for inmates generally consists of a kind of poorly prepared mixture of soybeans with wheat flour, which is impossible for inmates to eat; and he added that the military use the leftovers to feed their pigs.

On the other hand, he emphasized that there are no doctors or medicines in the prison, since the health of the prisoners is not a priority for the Government of the Island. He also stressed that many fellow captives suffer from dengue fever, hepatitis and other diseases , such as inmate Carlos Luis Águila Socarrás, who since December 17 has been in bed with vomiting and loss of appetite. At the time of disclosing this information, he had not received medical attention.

Likewise, the protester wanted to draw attention to the situation of the prisoner of Indian nationality Dalvinder Singh Jagpal, who has been in prison for more than 20 years, convicted without evidence, and who on December 21 was denied his parole for the second time.

Osvaldo Lugo Pita, 35 years old, is a resident of the neighborhood La Guinera, belonging to the Arroyo Naranjo municipality. He was captured at his home on July 17, 2021. He is currently being held on the fourth floor, south center wing of building three, where he is serving a 12-year prison sentence for the alleged crime of sedition after a trial held on days 24 and 25 January 2022.

The protester, who before being arrested earned a living as a self-employed worker, in a previous telephone conversation narrated how on July 12, 2021, the repressors stoned the protesters of La Güinera and shot them with rubber bullets, and how he managed to slip away when agents of the Police and anti-riot troops, known as “Black Wasps”, began to shoot them with lead bullets.
