12 moments that marked the year of vaccination against COVID-19 in Mexico

5. Immunizations for all educational personnel for back to school

The federal government began vaccination for educational personnel across the country May 18, 2021, in preparation for the return to the classroom for more than a year and a half of distance classes. Although teachers were immunized with the CanSino vaccine, the face-to-face return to schools is only gradually being completed.

6. Immunization at the US border

With the arrival of 1 million Johnson & Johnson vaccines donated by the United States, Mexico on June 14 began vaccination for the population between the ages of 18 and 39 in the border area between the two countries, with the aim of being able to reopen the border as soon as possible.

7. Donation of vaccines to Latin American countries

Since June, the federal government began shipping AstraZeneca vaccines to Latin American countries, including Paraguay, Belize, Bolivia, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. To date, according to Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, “Mexico has been supportive and we donate 2 million 480,800 doses to other countries in need.”

8. End of vaccination contracts

In July, Sinovac became the first pharmaceutical company to fulfill its 20 million vaccine contract with Mexico. CanSino followed on November 14, with 14 million doses, since the agreement was modified downwards, and on November 20, the company AstraZeneca was fulfilled for the 77.4 million agreed. Pfizer doses remain to complete with the 195 million that were acquired to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.
