MIAMI, United States. — Oriandi Oviedo Acosta, 11J protester imprisoned in the Guanajay maximum security prisonprovince of Artemisa, denounced to this newspaper the sanction received for his participation in the government protests last year.
The prisoner declared CubaNet who had initially been sentenced to 16 years in prison for the alleged crimes of assault, contempt of authority, public disorder and criminal association. Upon appeal, the sentence was set at 14 years.
The first trial against him had been held on December 20 and 21, 2021 in the Court of Artemisa, with a prosecutor’s request for 25 years of deprivation of liberty.
Self-employed by profession, Oviedo Acosta reports that he was arrested during the demonstration on July 11, 2021 and beaten by a group of approximately eight police officers, including one with the last name Castillo.
Initially, he was held in the detention center known as the Cuatro Caminos technician, where he was held captive for 43 days until on August 23 he was transferred to the maximum security prison in Guanajay, in the municipality where he resides.
The wife of the 11J protester told this newspaper that on his first visit to the prison he still showed some marks from the blows he received. She pointed out to the woman a bruise on her forehead for which she was not provided medical assistance and that to date has not been removed.
Oviedo Acosta, 42, reveals that in prison his anxiety condition has worsened and that in mid-May he developed severe chest pain, diagnosed by doctors as a pre-infarction.
Since March 2022 he has been kept in the punishment cell in retaliation for having called the journalist Yolanda Huerga, from Radio Television Marti. That same day he was stripped of all his belongings, including his bible and his phone book.
