“We cannot yet confirm the exact figures, but it is clear that there were significant displacements within the country and some movements at the borders”
Nearly 100,000 people have fled their homes in Ukraine and thousands have sought refuge abroad following the Russian invasion, the UN said on Thursday.
“We cannot yet confirm the exact figures, but it is clear that there were significant displacements within the country and some movements at the borders,” a spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Shabia Mantoo, told AFP.
“We think that close to 100,000 people have already fled their homes and may have moved within the country and that several thousand have crossed international borders,” he reported.
Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, announced during the day the strengthening of UNHCR’s operations and capacity in Ukraine and neighboring countries.
He also called on the governments of those countries to “leave the borders open for people seeking safety and protection” from Ukraine.
“We are ready to support everyone’s efforts to respond to any situation of forced displacement,” he wrote in a statement.
