Intentional homicides decrease in the first 100 days of Claudia Sheinbaum’s government
Prior to the first 100 days of the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the Government of Mexico issued a statement highlighting that the intentional homicides in Mexico showed a reduction significant 16.3%, product of the National Security Strategy.
The daily average of intentional homicides went from 87 victims in September to 72.8 in December 2024, the lowest level recorded in recent months. This reduction has been reflected in six of the seven states that concentrate almost half of the victims of this crime: Baja California, State of Mexico, Chihuahua, Jalisco, Guerrero and Nuevo León. However, Guanajuato, the entity with the highest number of homicides in 2024, reported an increase in this period.
In addition, between October and December 2024, decreases were recorded in other high-impact crimes:
- Intentional injuries due to gunshot: -19.7%
- Robbery with violence: -4.7%
President Sheinbaum highlighted that these advances reflect the continuous and strategic work of her security cabinet. “This result is important, but we must continue working every day to maintain and reinforce this trend,” he stated in his morning conference.
In the same period, security forces arrested 7,720 people for high-impact crimes, seized more than 3,600 firearms and confiscated 66.5 tons of drugs, including 1,168 kilos and 561 thousand fentanyl pills, enough to produce more than 60 million of doses. 115 clandestine methamphetamine laboratories were also dismantled in eight states, financially affecting criminal organizations with an estimated 27,000 million pesos.
The Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch, stressed that coordination between the Secretariat of National Defense, the Secretariat of the Navy and the National Guard has been key to achieving these results.
