1-0: Everton passes the procedure in Venezuela

The Everton Chile fell this Tuesday by 1-0 against Monagas in Venezuela but advanced to the third phase of the Libertadores Cupin a match played at the Monumental de Maturín stadium, after the 3-0 achieved in the first leg.

The match was marked by constant interruptions caused by fouls by the home team. The aggressiveness of Monagas reached its zenith in the second half with the expulsion of Luis Guerra, which marked the final result.

The clearest scoring opportunity in the intense first minutes was Everton’s in the 9th minute, with a shot by Ismael Sosa from the center of the area, assisted by Benjamín Berríos. Then, in the 15th minute, Monagas had an opportunity with a shot to the center of Franklin González’s goal that the Chilean goalkeeper saved from the ground.

From there, the Venezuelans began a constant attack near the Everton goal, but the lack of offensive volume prevented them from doing any damage, unlike those from Viña del Mar, who showed clarity in the plays of the first half.

Already in the twilight of the first set, the intensity grew for both teams after a header by Edanyilber Navas, from Monagas, went wide in the 38th minute and, two minutes later, the Everton goalkeeper saved a header by Grendy Perozo in the small area.

The first 45 minutes ended goalless, with more than 20 fouls and two yellow cards that the Bolivian referee Gery Vargas showed to David Zalzman, from Monagas, and to Diego Oyarzún, from Everton, for dangerous play.

As soon as the second half started, the locals opened the scoring and shortened the distance from their Chilean rivals with a left-footed shot by Óscar González. The Venezuelan player shot from the center of the area and to the right side of the goal after receiving a corner kick, almost free of a mark.

Everton set out to defend their advantage against a local team that, after four changes, reactivated to attack. Monagas’s desperate attempt to score took its toll and, in the 78th minute, Venezuelan Luis Guerra received a red card for assaulting Berríos, an expulsion that destabilized the local team. From then on, Everton dominated but did not specify the scoring options.
