The Argentinian alexis canelo scored a goal on Tuesday to give the Toluca of Mexican football a 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen of the Bundesliga in a friendly match. At the Nemesio Díez stadium in Toluca, 2,600 meters above sea level, Toluca and Bayer Leverkusen offered an intense game, with constant arrivals.
Bayer’s most dangerous options were created by the Iranian Sardar Azmoun; at 31 he reached the final line on the right, crossed and in the blocking Haret Ortega narrowly scored on his goal. In minute 38 he tried a shot from outside the area that goalkeeper Luis García rejected. Toluca replied in the 42nd minute. Alexis Canelo received a ball inside the area, cut off Jonathan Tah and defined with his left foot for 1-0.
In the second half, Bayer Leverkusen went for a draw. The Brazilian Paulinho appeared insistently on the left, but it was difficult for him to find a finisher for his center. In minute 68, the visiting team tried it with a service from the right by Frenchman Moussa Diaby that Argentinean Exequiel Palacios finished off with the right just wide.
In response, in the 70th minute, Ian González missed a lost ball inside the small area. He received it alone, with the defeated goalkeeper, but inexplicably shot to the side. The game was part of the celebrations that the pharmaceutical company Bayer, owner of the German team, is carrying out for the 100 years of stay in Mexico.
Bayer Leverkusen finished in third place in the Bundesliga in the 2021-2022 season, a position that gives them the right to play in the Champions League next season. Toluca finished in 15th place among 18 teams in the Mexican tournament.
