0-2: El Salvador condemns Honduras

0-2: El Salvador condemns Honduras

The selection of The Savior defeated this Sunday by 0-2 to Honduras in San Pedro Sula and condemned his rival to last place in the Concacaf qualifiers for the Qatar World Cup 2022.

Honduras came out with seven changes regarding its line-up against Canada, against which it also lost 0-2, last Thursday, and although it created a lot of play on the wings, mainly on the right with Wisdom Quayé and Kevin López, it failed again when defining in the rival area.

The first half hour was fairly even, with a back-and-forth game, but with few clear chances for both teams to score. Bryan Moya and Bryan Róchez, the men from Honduras in attack, gave little work to the Salvadoran goal defended by Mario González.

The Salvadoran team arrived in the Honduran area with little clarity with Nelson Bonilla and Christian Gil trying to do damage against a rival that was surprised by the unusual changes of their coach, Hernán Darío Gómez, rotating some players in a position that has not been usual for them. .

At minute 34, El Salvador took the lead with a goal by Nelson Bonilla, who eluded a defender inside the area and crossed the Honduran goalkeeper Edrick Menjívar.

The despair and thirst for victory of the Hondurans, who have not won a single game in the Concacaf octagonal tie, seemed to play against them, which El Salvador took advantage of, which made it more orderly.

In an attempt to rescue the game, the H came out more launched on the attack and with two changes in their lead, the fast Romell Quioto and Alberth Elis, but although they exercised greater control, they continued with many inaccuracies in the passes.

The Hondurans exercised control of the game, but unproductive and few shots to the rival frame, while the Salvadorans waited like crouched to do damage to the counterattack.

Honduras had the clearest chance in the 57th minute with a powerful shot by Bryan Moya, but the Salvadoran goalkeeper rejected the ball in a good way. In minute 68, Moya again shot on goal, but a Salvadoran defender headed in another arrival by the Hondurans, who pushed their opponent back.

The defense and goalkeeper of El Salvador drowned out Honduras’ intentions to score in the second half, in which they played better and kept more of the ball.

When the first minute of the four stoppage time given by the referee was played, Darwin Cerén scored the final 2-0, in one of the rare arrivals to the Honduran area of the Salvadorans. El Salvador’s victory is their first away against Honduras in qualifying matches for a World Cup.

At the close of the day, El Salvador jumped to sixth position in the standings and reached nine points, below Costa Rica, which has added 13, leaving Honduras sunk with three and without victory in ten games.

Honduras’s next match will be away, against the United States, which today lost 2-0 against Canada, while El Salvador will host the Canadians, who remain leaders and undefeated in the competition.
