River Plate won this Saturday in a penalty shootout 4-2 against Penarol after drawing 0-0 in a preseason friendly match played on the Maldonado campus, near the Uruguayan city of Punta del Este. Maximiliano Salas, Giulianno Galoppo, Tomás Galván and the youth Ian Subiabre scored from eleven meters and sealed the victory for the team led by Marcelo Gallardo.
Gastón Togni and Leandro Umpiérrez converted for Peñarol. Julio Daguer finished far from the goal and Ignacio Aguirre’s shot was caught by Santiago Beltrán, who added minutes as a starter due to the injuries of Franco Armani and Ezequiel Centurión. When 9 minutes into the game the young goalkeeper collided with Abel Hernández, who was injured and had to leave the field.

After ending his contract with Liverpool and closing the year of 2025 as a top scorer in the Uruguayan League, the 35-year-old forward had shortly before formalized his relationship with Aurinegro and this Saturday he made his debut. At the moment the severity of the injury is unknown and therefore the length of time the attacker will be out of the playing field.
At the end, in another of the outstanding plays, Subiabre was very close to scoring, but his great play ended with a good response from goalkeeper Sebastián Britos. Peñarol’s number 1 played for the first time in a team that also included the recently incorporated Lucas Ferreira and Facundo Batista.
In River Plate, Gonzalo Montiel, Lucas Martínez Quarta, Lautaro Rivero and the Colombian creative Juan Fernando Quintero were once again starters, while Aníbal Moreno made his debut. River Plate will debut in the Argentine tournament on January 24 against Barracas Central. Peñarol will face Racing this Monday for the League Cup, a summer competition contested by Uruguay’s first division teams.
